2 Characters of Guitar Learners - Private / Group Guitar Course Singapore

As I've been teaching guitar since I was secondary 4, I observed that there are 2 characters of guitar learners :
  1. "Driving" guitar player (I was in this category), very fiery, can't wait to master thing, ambitious, tend to play loud (strong movement) & fast but careless. They (or I should say, "we") don't pay attention on details, lack of control, no patient in "fragmental" practice but keep playing the whole thing.
  2. "Too careful" guitar player or slow one, sometimes could be too soft & not so so expressive. But actually they have very good control.

It's good to have both "drive" & "control" - it's like car driving; sometimes we accelerate, sometimes we slow down - it's about control, even if we need to speed up speed up within our control. So learning music teach us to practice the skill to gain control over our imagination, understanding, motoric movement, coordination, and many other elements.

Having said that, in the area of movement, practice slowly (patient = control) at the area you're facing problem - confine the small area of the problem, no point keep repeating the area you've already mastered (you better use your time to solve the problem) - think, analyze, solve.

Once you have the solution try to execute it ACCURATEly (slow), repeat it more to gain CONSISTENCy. Once it becomes intuitive you can increase the SPEED within your control, then you'll naturally develop STRENGTH. Sometimes if you prioritize strength, your speed might not be fast if you don't feel comfortable with the movement yet.

So, as guitar player you might keep this 4 fundamentals in mind while you're practicing : Accuracy, Consistency, Speed, Strength

Happy trying!
